While a young man, St. John Bosco loved to play around and mastered magic tricks. He could conjure eggs, change water to wine, guess the amount of money in people’s pockets, and tell what is happening at a distance. John Bosco especially loved playing tricks on his gullible landlord Thomas Cumino, who suspected John Bosco was a demonic sorcerer. Eventually, John Bosco was summoned to see the cathedral parish priest and explain his magic tricks. John Bosco first requested a few minutes to think over his reply and then for a five-soldi coin, but the priest could find neither his watch nor his purse. The priest angrily accused John Bosco of being a thieving demonic servant before calming down and asking for an explanation. John Bosco explained it as mere sleight of hand, and that the priest had left his wallet on a kneeler and his watch on a side-table. He had hidden them both under a lampshade the whole time and returned both items to the priest. The priest had a good laugh and told John Bosco to continue his magic tricks. Many priests would come and watch his shows, admiring how John Bosco could find constant happiness in God.
