Feast of the Baptism of the Lord The Baptism of the Lord reminds us how important Baptism is that we should not take lightly. Besides trying to “fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15), through a baptism of repentance, Jesus also identified himself with every sinner, taking on our sins. His Yes to John’s baptism of repentance is a Yes to the entire will of God, expressed in solidarity with men, who have incurred guilt but yearn for righteousness. By the anointment of the Holy Spirit, He prepared Himself for His mission on earth to bring salvation to all. Likewise, through our baptism, the Holy Spirit comes upon us to anoint us. This anointment gives our life new meaning–a rebirth–and it prepares us for our new mission. It symbolizes a denial of our old self as we accept a new identity to be disciple of Christ. With this new identity, we have made a new commitment to a new calling. Baptism is not for a selected privileged group, but for the whole world because “God shows no partiality, but in every nation any one who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.” (Acts 10:34-35) Through baptism, we are empowered to bring this Good News to the ends of the earth, and this is our […]

(本文以英文為準) “He must increase, but I must decrease.” What does this mean? God neither increases nor decreases. For if He increases, He is not perfect; if He decreases, He is not God. This is a great mystery! Before the Lord Jesus came, men were glorifying themselves; the Word came as a man, to lessen man’s pride and glory, and to increase the glory of God. He came to forgive sin when man confesses. For man’s confession is man’s humility: God’s pity is God’s glory. Therefore, let man acknowledge his own lowliness by repenting his sins and let God show His pity. “He must increase, but I must decrease:” that is, God must be glorified, but I must confess. This truth, Christ and John signified by their deaths. For John was lessened by the Head: Christ was exalted on the cross. May the glory of God then increase in us, and our own glory decrease, that in the end our glory may increase in God! For the more you understand God, He seems to be growing in you; but God Himself does not grow, being perfect. You understood a little yesterday; you understand more today, and will understand much more tomorrow. It is as if one’s eyes were being cured of blindness, and begin to see a little glimmer of light, and the following days see […]

Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord We always hope that God’s signs to us could be as visible and clear as the star in the East. Yet we fail to realize that it is a condition we need to cultivate within ourselves, to become better attuned to God’s presence and calling which could be easily felt or heard by the humble seekers like the wise men (the three Magi) in the Gospel. In turn, we are also called to be God’s sign and presence for the world to recognize Jesus in our words and deeds, especially for the searching hearts around us. Our actions of compassion and justice are channels for others to see/encounter Jesus in us. To become a blessing to the world, we need to set the Lord always before us. (Ref. Psalm 16:8-11, Acts 2:25-28) Yet there are people who are like the Herod in the scripture who, by every means, try to destroy (the pathway to) Jesus as their self interests and power are threatened. Are we a channel or a hindrance of God’s presence to this world? As we begin a new year, let us be the ones who rejoice exceedingly with great joy when we see the star (encounter Jesus), and be determined to deny ourselves in pursuit of […]

A Mother’s Journey of Faith, Suffering and Joy

“Let it be done to me according to thy Word.” (Luke 1:38) After watching the film “Mary of Nazareth” and listening to many personal reflections from those who also watched the screenings, I decided to write my own reflection on the lessons we can learn from the movie which will incorporate elements of sharings from those I have heard from. I hope it will capture most of the points that were raised and so benefit our readers, whether they have watched the film or not. “Mary of Nazareth” is an in-depth look at the miraculous life of Mary, Mother of God, of our Lord Jesus Christ. Through the film, we are able to experience the life of Mary in her own eyes, from her childhood to the birth of Jesus, and subsequently His Passion and Resurrection. It is magnificently produced, directed and acted out ― truly a rich cinematic experience for the viewer. Almost everyone I heard from expressed that the movie allowed them to grow closer in their relationship with Mary, and through her to her son Jesus Christ Himself. There were two main themes that arose from the sharings. Firstly, the faith exhibited by Mary throughout her life and secondly, the joy with which she lived out her faith, especially in the midst of tremendous suffering. There are abundant examples to draw from which demonstrate […]

(本文以英文為準) John was the friend of the Bridegroom; he sought not his own glory, but bore witness to the truth. And therefore he wished not his disciples to remain with him, to the hindrance of their duty to follow the Lord; but rather showed them whom they should follow, saying, “Behold the Lamb of God.” For He alone and singly is the Lamb without spot, without sin; not because His spots are wiped off; but because He never had a spot. He alone is the Lamb of God, for by His blood alone can men be redeemed. This is the Lamb whom the wolves fear; even the slain Lamb, by whom the lion was slain. There were disciples of John who not only did not follow Christ, but were even enviously disposed toward Him; but the better part heard, and followed; not from contempt of their former master, but by his persuasion; because he promised them that Christ would baptize with the Holy Ghost. And see with what modesty their zeal was accompanied. They did not straightway go and interrogate Jesus on great and necessary doctrines, nor in public, but sought private converse with Him; for we are told that “Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, ‘What seek you?’” Hence we learn, that when we once begin to form good resolutions, […]
