In today’s Gospel, Jesus says: “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign”. He regarded the people as evil because they refused to believe and demanded a miracle which would convince them. Jesus also says: “Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.” The Ninevites were pagan, but once they heard Jonah’s message, they believed in God and repented. (Jonah 3:4-9) Likewise, the queen of Sheba was pagan. She went all the way to Jerusalem in order to listen to Solomon. Once she witnessed his wisdom, she praised God. (1 Kings 10:1-10) These pagans believed in God after listening to the proclamation, unfortunately the Jews refused to listen to Jesus. Let us live authentic Christian lives by listening to the word of Jesus and observing it in our lives.

Commentaries on the daily readings by Sacred Space, The gospel reading for this Sunday is about Jesus and the ten lepers who came to ask for His mercy. Because leprosy is contagious, the lepers stood from Jesus at a distance. The way they shouted to Jesus, “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” and the way they obeyed His command of showing themselves to the priests, showed that they have great faith in Jesus. Even before they reached the priests, they were healed on their way. This act of showing themselves to the priests was actually quite important for the lepers, because lepers were always treated as outcasts, and even when they were cleansed, they need the priests’ verification and announcement before they could become part of the community again.(Lev 14:1-32) Though all ten lepers were healed, only one returned to Jesus. The Gospel reading specially mentioned that this man was a Samaritan, someone who was despised by the Jews. On one hand, this shows that Jesus’ mercy is unconditional. He did not treat the lepers differently based on their race. On the other hand, from what Jesus said to the Samaritan, it indicated that Jesus values a person’s response to Him more than the person’s identity or background. While all ten lepers had faith in the Lord’s mercy […]

In today’s Gospel, we read that a woman called out to praise Jesus, she said: “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.” That was a tribute to Jesus but also to His mother. When Jesus heard this, He took the opportunity to teach us the true source of greatness. He said: “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.” Mary as a young virgin listened to God’s words through Archangel Gabriel. She chose to say “Yes”. She said: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38) From that moment on, the Word became flesh. Mary’s “Yes” led to the Incarnation. She listened to Jesus and honoured her “Yes” all the way to the foot of the cross. What Jesus said points out the true source of Mary’s greatness. As Christians, we receive and listen to the word of God. But do we observe it in our daily lives? Let us learn from Mother Mary!

Jesus used the first analogy to illustrate the importance of praying with persistence. He then promised us three things: “Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” He wants us to have faith in our Heavenly Father, that He is merciful and generous; if even fathers among us, who are sinners, know how to give good things to their children, how would our Heavenly Father do less than them? He sees us as His children, and if we ask Him persistently what we need, as long as it is good for us, He will grant it to us. Notice that it does not mean He will grant us whatever we want, because what we want might not be always good for us. Jesus’ last statement also gave away what God thinks is the best for us: the Holy Spirit. If we ask for something due to our greed or selfishness, God will not give us, because having it will not do us any good. For example, if a child asks his dad for bread, fish and egg, his dad would give him because those are healthy good for him, and his dad certainly would not give him snake or scorpion that his child doesn’t want and which are even harmful to him. Therefore, […]

In today’s Gospel, Jesus went to visit Martha and Mary in the village of Bethany. We see that Martha and Mary used very different ways in serving Jesus. Mary sat beside the Lord at His feet listening to Him, and Martha was “burdened with much serving”. Many zealous Christians are like Martha that they are busy with serving all the time. And Jesus said to her: “Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” Jesus did not say this to blame Martha, but to remind her (and all of us) the importance of listening intently in prayers. In fact, Jesus talks about the importance of listening to God many times (cf. John 10:27-28, Luke 8:21, John 8:47). If we do not first spend time in listening to God, how do we know His will? And if we do not do His will, our efforts are futile. No matter how busy we are, if we seize every moment, we can find time to pray and listen to His guidance. Commentary on Luke 10:38-42

Blessed John Paul II had written an apostolic letter named “Rosarium Virginis Mariae” which explains the value of saying the Rosary: In the spiritual journey of the Rosary, based on the constant contemplation – in Mary’s company – of the face of Christ, this demanding ideal of being conformed to him is pursued through an association which could be described in terms of friendship. We are thereby enabled to enter naturally into Christ’s life and as it were to share his deepest feelings. In this regard Blessed Bartolo Longo has written: “Just as two friends, frequently in each other’s company, tend to develop similar habits, so too, by holding familiar converse with Jesus and the Blessed Virgin, by meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary and by living the same life in Holy Communion, we can become, to the extent of our lowliness, similar to them and can learn from these supreme models a life of humility, poverty, hiddenness, patience and perfection”. The Rosary mystically transports us to Mary’s side as she is busy watching over the human growth of Christ in the home of Nazareth. This enables her to train us and to mold us with the same care, until Christ is “fully formed” in us (cf. Gal 4:19). This role of Mary, totally grounded in that of Christ and […]
