Pope Francis celebrated mass for the employees and staff members from the Vatican Typography – the printing press – and the L’Osservatore Romano newspaper. In the homily, he said: “The Word of Jesus goes to the heart because it is the Word of love, it is a beautiful word and brings love, makes us to love. These ideologues cut off the road of love, and also that of beauty – and they began to argue sharply among themselves, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’. All a matter of intellect! And when ideology enters into the Church, when ideology enters into our understanding of the Gospel, no [authentic] comprehen[sion] is [possible].” Source: Pope Francis: Mass with Vatican printers, L’Osservatore Romano

On Thursday, Pope Francis celebrated mass for the Italian State Police who serve the Vatican area. He said in the homily that God is a real, concrete person, not some intangible essence or esoteric mist like “god-spray”. God is a real person — a father. Our faith begins with an encounter with Jesus. We believe in God who is Father, who is Son, who is Holy Spirit. We believe in Persons, and when we talk to God we talk to Persons: or I speak with the Father, or I speak with the Son, or I speak with the Holy Spirit. And this is the faith. Source: Pope: Our small daily encounters with Christ

On Wednesday, Pope Francis said in General Audience catechesis: “We too must be clear in our Christian life, that to enter into the glory of God requires daily fidelity to His will, even when it requires sacrifice, when at times it requires us to change our plans.” Read full text of his catechesis: Audience: Jesus, the only and eternal Priest

Pope Francis dedicated Tuesday’s mass to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI who turned 86 on this date. His homily was centred on the theme of the Holy Spirit. He said: “Everybody seems happy about the presence of the Holy Spirit but it’s not really the case and there is still that temptation to resist it…The Spirit pushes us to take a more evangelical path but we resist this…Submit to the Holy Spirit, which comes from within us and makes go forward along the path of holiness”. Pope Francis mentioned that the proposals weren not fully implemented due to people’s resistance of the Holy Spirit. Source: Pope: 2nd Vatican Council, work of Holy Spirit but some want to turn back the clock.

Pope Francis sent a condolence telegram to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. Pope Francis prayed that “all Bostonians will be united in a resolve not to be overcome by evil, but to combat evil with good (cf. Rom. 12:21), working together to build an eve more just, free and secure society for generations yet to come.” Source: Pope Francis: ‘Combat Evil With Good’

Pope Francis celebrated Mass on Sunday evening in the Papal Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls. He said in the homily: “Those who listen to us and observe us must be able to see in our actions what they hear from our lips, and so give glory to God! Inconsistency on the part of pastors and the faithful between what they say and what they do, between word and manner of life, is undermining the Church’s credibility.” Source: Pope Francis: St Paul’s homily (full text)

Pope Francis celebrated mass with Vatican security guards and firemen on Saturday, he said in the homily: “We must not be afraid of problems: Jesus himself said to his disciples: ‘It is I. Do not be afraid’. In life’s difficulties, with problems, with new things that we must face: the Lord is always with us. We may make mistakes, certainly, but he is always with us and says: ‘You made a mistake, now get back on the right path’”. Source: Pope Francis: Learning to take life as it comes, the good with the bad

On Wednesday, Pope Francis said in general audience catechesis: “The temptation to put God to one side, to put ourselves at the center is ever-present and the experience of sin wounds our Christian life, our being children of God. This is why we must have the courage of faith, we must resist being led to the mentality that tells us: “There is no need for God, He is not that important for you”. It is the exact opposite: only by behaving as children of God, without being discouraged by our falls, can we feel loved by Him, our life will be new, inspired by serenity and joy. God is our strength! God is our hope!” Source: Audience: Living like God’s children [full text]

On Tuesday, Pope Francis celebrated Mass in the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta with members of the Vatican medical services and office staff of the Vatican City Government. In the homily, he said: “When we prefer to gossip, gossip about others, criticize others- these are everyday things that happen to everyone, including me – these are the temptations of the evil one who does not want the Spirit to come to us and bring about peace and meekness in the Christian community”. “These struggles always exist” in the parish, in the family, in the neighborhood, among friends”. Instead through the Spirit we are born into a new life, he makes us “meek, charitable.” Source: Pope: The struggle to reject gossip

Photo courtesy of Vatican Radio Pope Francis on Sunday celebrated Mass in the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, the Cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, during which he officially took possession of the Basilica. In the homily he said: “Dear brothers and sisters, let us be enveloped by the mercy of God; let us trust in his patience, which always gives us more time. Let us find the courage to return to his house, to dwell in his loving wounds, allowing ourselves be loved by him and to encounter his mercy in the sacraments. We will feel his tenderness, so beautiful, we will feel his embrace, and we too will become more capable of mercy, patience, forgiveness and love.” Full text of homily: Pope: have the courage to return to God

Photo provided by Br. Pope Francis loves using metaphors in his talks. As archbishop of Buenos Aires, he used similar figures of speech to get his ideas across. He told a story of being in an airport and seeing an older, very well-known, successful businessman waiting at baggage claim. He said it’s common to see young people be impatient, but it came as a surprise to see an older gentleman get “infuriated because his bag was late.” “It made me sad to see a person who wasn’t able to enjoy the wisdom of old age. Instead of improving (with age) like a fine wine, he had gone sour like a wine gone bad.” Source: Master of metaphor: Pope Francis can weave a vivid tale
