By Grace We Are Saved Through Faith

In the Lenten season, the Passion of Christ is a stark reminder of God’s love for us. Christ died on the Cross for our salvation. St. Paul told us in the Second Reading that it is “by grace you have been saved through faith and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8) and that we who believe are “created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.” (Ephesians 2:10)

God’s Signs for Our Feeble Minds
While winter is known for her brutality, the Lenten spirituality of prayer, repentance, and penance finds resonance in her austerity and rigor. The Lenten season begins just when winter is picking up steam. This Sunday is the first of six Sundays of Lent.

Hundredfold Reward
This which is here said, shall receive a hundredfold, may be understood in a higher sense. This means, that all who have despised temporal things for the sake of the kingdom of heaven through undoubting faith, taste the joy of the same kingdom in this life which is full of persecutions, and in the expectation of the heavenly country, have a share in the happiness of all the elect.
