“Spiritual Talk” – The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord – Fr. Anthony Ho

This weekend, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which is commemorated as the first of the Luminous Mysteries added to the Rosary by Pope John Paul II in 2002. Jesus was baptized with sinners in the River Jordan, representing how He would take on the consequences of our sins. Just as Christmas commemorates the birth of Christ, the Feast of His Baptism which ends the Christmas season commemorates our spiritual birth. When Christ was baptized, three things happened, which give our own baptisms much spiritual significance. First, the sky was opened, which calls to mind Moses' parting of the Red Sea to enter the Promised Land--we likewise have a path to enter the Kingdom of God through baptism. Second, the Holy Spirit descended over the waters to above Christ's head in the form of a dove, which calls to mind the dove that Noah sent over the waters, representing new creation--we likewise become new Temples of the Holy Spirit in Baptism. Third, the Father called Jesus "my beloved Son". When we are baptized, the grace of God makes us His sons and daughters, and forgives all our sins. From this, we can see how important baptism is and even during this time of pandemic, we ought to continue baptizing with fewer people in attendance. As Christians, we should be zealous for evangelizing, so that others might experience the grace of baptism and join the big family that is the Church.

“Sunday Homily: Fr. Justin Huang” Begin Again With Equilibrium

Many of us struggle with highs and lows in our lives: When we’re high, we’re very high, but unfortunately unprepared for problems and sufferings that eventually come. If you’re the kind of person who gets surprised at suffering, such as when COVID-19 struck the world, this may apply to you. On the other hand, once we’re low, we’re distraught, forgetful that God’s still with us.

【Spiritual Talk】Baptism of the Lord – Fr. Anthony Ho

This Sunday, the Church celebrates the Baptism of the Lord, which commemorates Jesus' revelation to the Jews, as opposed to His revelation to the Gentile Magi at the Epiphany and to His apostles at the Marriage at Cana. Jesus' baptism appears in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, but only Matthew records the dialogue between John the Baptist and Jesus before the baptism. Originally, John was not willing to baptize Jesus and said Jesus ought to baptize him since he knew his lowliness before Jesus. But Jesus permitted it anyways to fulfill all things. Matthew's Gospel mentions the word "fulfill" many times, meaning to fulfill the Old Testament. He describes angels, magi, John, even God the Father testifying to Jesus' identity and mission. The Holy Spirit descends as a dove on Jesus' head, while God the Father says, "This is my son in whom I am well pleased." The descent of the Holy Spirit reminds us of the Spirit of God moving above the waters in Genesis and of the dove sent above the floods by Noah - both times representing the new beginning of the world. Jesus' baptism is a new beginning and the end of the Christmas season. Our baptism is also a new beginning and gives us a new birth.

Was “John’s baptism” relevant to Christian baptism?

As a precursor, John had gone before Christ by birth and his preaching echoed that of His (Mt 4:17; Mk 1:15). So his baptism was also meant to be a foreshadowing of the new birth (Jn 3:5-7) brought about by the actual Sacrament which Jesus later established.

This Sunday is the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, and Fr. Anthony Ho explains to us the events surrounding the Baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. The Gift of Baptism

Feast of the Baptism of the Lord The Baptism of the Lord reminds us how important Baptism is that we should not take lightly. Besides trying to “fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15), through a baptism of repentance, Jesus also identified himself with every sinner, […]
