Parting discourse from Jesus

Sixth Sunday of Easter In today’s gospel, let us connect ourselves with the heart of Jesus. In this very touching last supper discourse, before His Passion and filled with parting emotions, He poured out His heart unto His disciples (us). His immense love for us is evident, but with mixed emotions, because He knows very […]

Peace that the World cannot Give

One who is presumptuous often imagines that he has gained God’s peace through self-distrust and trust in God when the case is far otherwise. And this will be made clear to you by the way he takes his failures. If, after a fall, you give way to despondency and vexation, and despairingly complain that you […]

My Sheep Hear My Voice

In today’s Gospel, the Jews wanted our Lord to say, “I am the Christ.” Perhaps, as they only thought of the Messiah in a human way, having failed to discern His divinity in the Prophets they wanted Christ to confess Himself the Messiah, of the seed of David; that they might accuse Him of aspiring […]

Seek Jesus for Jesus’ Sake

In today’s Gospel, Our Lord sets Himself above Moses, who did not dare to say that he gave the flesh which perishes not. The multitude therefore remembering what Moses had done, and wishing for some greater miracle, said: “You promise the flesh which is eternal, and does no works equal to those Moses did. He […]

The Road to Emmaus

Third Sunday of Easter The readings of the 3rd Sunday of Easter include a bold proclamation of the resurrection (Acts), a moral exhortation for the newly baptized (1 Peter) and the appearance of the Risen Jesus to two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke). Each text illumines a different feature of the Easter mystery […]

Faith and Works

After speaking with certain Protestants, a Catholic may ask “Is it then enough to only believe in the Son, that one may have eternal life?” By no means. Hear Christ Himself declare this, and saying, “Not every one that says unto Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven” (Matt 7:21); and the […]

Reflection for the Second Sunday of Easter

Second Sunday of Easter If Judas was known by his betrayal of Jesus and Peter by his denial, then Thomas was in no lesser way to be known by his doubtfulness. To the majority of us, if we do not identify ourselves with Judas or Peter, we certainly have times finding ourselves to be like […]

Jesus and Abraham

(本文以英文為準) The worldly minds of the Jews are intent on the flesh only; they think only of Jesus’ age in the flesh: “Then said the Jews to Him, you are not fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” that is to say, “Many ages have passed since Abraham died; and how […]

Live not in your grave

Fifth Sunday of Lent “Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.” (Romans 8:8) Living according to the flesh is like living according to one’s will and desires, focusing on one’s needs rather than others’. When we are so self-centred, we are trapped within our own self, our grave, and we will die. Jesus […]

To risk or not to risk

Second Sunday of Lent Lenten season serves as an invitation to us to change. But changes are not always welcome in our comfortable lives. The greatest risk in our faith journey is to not take any risks, and to be too comfortable with the status quo. Yet, only under one condition should these risks be […]

Worldly vs. Saintly Reasoning

How is this, that Peter, gifted with a revelation from the Father, has so soon fallen, and become unstable? For that Jesus was the Christ the Son of the living God, he had learnt by revelation, but the mystery of His cross and resurrection had not yet been revealed to him. Jesus, however, showing that […]

The Leaven of the Pharisees

(本文以英文為準) The Lord indeed abandons the Pharisees, as men uncorrected; for where there is a hope of correction, it is right to remain; but where the evil is incorrigible, we should go away. There follows: Now they had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in their ship with them more than one […]

Make the Wise Choice

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time God has given us the freedom of choice. He allows us to choose Him, or to reject Him; to choose righteousness, or to choose evil. The Syrophoenician Woman’s Faith

(本文以英文為準) Jesus calls the Gentiles dogs, as they were thought wicked by the Jews; and He means by bread the benefit which the Lord promised to the children, that is, to the Jews. The sense therefore is, that it is not right for the Gentiles first to be partakers of the benefit, […]

Jairus’ Daughter and the Woman with Hemorrhage

(本文以英文為準) This woman afflicted with hemorrhage, who was known to all, did not dare to approach the Savior openly, nor to come to Him, because, according to the law, she was unclean (Lev. 15:25); for this reason she touched Him behind, and not in front, for that she dare not do, but […]

Calming of the Storm

Today’s Gospel we read how Jesus calmed the storm. Mark wants to convey the true identity of Jesus through narrating this miracle. Having witnessed the calming of the sea, the disciples said to one another: “Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?” (Mark 4:41) Other than […]

Come follow me!

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time The prophet Isaiah prophesied about this “great light” in the Old Testament, which is the Messiah that the Jews were waiting for all along, and we now know that this light is […]

Signs of the Believers

(本文以英文為準) To drive out demons, speak new languages, pick up serpents with their hands, drink poison without being harmed, to heal the sick by the laying of hands; are we then without faith because we cannot do these signs? No, but these things were necessary in the beginning of the Church, for the […]

The sabbath was made for man

The disciples being hungry, only ate simple food, not for pleasure, but on account of the necessity of nature. The Pharisees however, accused the disciples of doing wrong. Pope Francis: In every generations, through baptism we are reborn to the new life of grace

(CNA/EWTN News) During his general audience on January 15, Pope Francis continued his reflections on the Sacrament of Baptism, emphasizing that we are called to use the grace we receive in order to become “missionary disciples.” Turning to the Church in Japan as an example of how “small communities of the faithful” have survived “clandestinely […]

Healing in Body and Soul

(本文以英文為準) Because the multitude thought that it was not lawful to heal on the sabbath day, they waited for the evening, to bring those who were to be healed to Jesus. In a mystical sense, the setting of the sun signifies Jesus’ passion, who had said, “As long as I am […]

Hannah’s Prayer

Commentaries on the daily readings by Sacred Space Tuesday of the First week in Ordinary Time (Liturgical Year A) Hannah had been married for many years but remained barren, and she suffered constantly from the humiliation of her rival — her husband’s other wife who had many […]

Pope Francis: Let us entrust the desires of our heart and our needs to Mother of God

On New Year’s Day 2014, Pope Francis said in his homily for the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God that the prayer of blessing which God gave to Moses are words of hope, which is not illusory or naïve, but has its foundation in God’s blessing. “The message of hope contained in this […]
