St. John Bosco had a gift for encouraging people to virtue by giving appropriate praise and encouragement. After entering the seminary with his good friend Louis Comollo, they planned to visit an old priest friend in the countryside together. But on arriving, John Bosco discovered that the two of them had left and would only return in the evening. He asked around and discovered that the servant responsible for the priest’s house was a very diligent woman named Magdalena. When he knocked on the door, Magdalena refused him entry, so he said, “That’s a pity, we are such good friends. If only Magdalena was here—I’ve heard that she is an extremely polite and courteous woman. Please send her my regards.” Overjoyed, she replied, “There is no need—I am she. But you overly praise me, I am merely a humble servant.” John Bosco replied, “Without you, he could do nothing. Thank you for your careful attention to his household.” They talked further and Magdalena discovered that John Bosco had gone with eating lunch, so she graciously invited him and his friends in and prepared for them so bounteous that they could not refrain from cheering, “Long live Magdalena!”
