The souls of humans were created for God, hence our greatest joy on Heaven and Earth is to be with God. But to be in Heaven is also joyful because we can be with the angels, saints, and our loved ones. If our earthly friendship is a holy one, it will continue forever in Heaven. There is no perfect happiness on Earth – we are either disappointed because we cannot obtain what we desire or are disappointed once we obtain what we desire. In Heaven, we will have eternal desire but also eternal fulfillment. In Purgatory or Hell, the greatest pain is to temporarily or permanently lose God, who is our perfect happiness. Jesus graphically describes Hell as a place of worms, fire, and gnashing of teeth. On earth, we must choose our eternal destination.
