St. John Bosco did not have an easy childhood – when he was twelve, he was forced by irreconcilable conflict with his brother Antonio to leave home and beg for work at a neighbouring farmer, Luigi Moglia. But when he arrived at the farm, Luigi told him sadly, “My poor child, I cannot take you in. It is now February and we only accept workers after March 25. Just go home.” John Bosco started to cry and begged him, “Sir, please accept me. If I go home, both my mother and I will suffer. I will work without pay – just give me food and lodging!” Mrs. Moglia saw the pitiful scene and pleaded her husband to take in the boy on a temporary basis. And Luigi’s young sister petitioned to have John Bosco look over the livestock instead of her. Finally, Luigi relented and assigned John Bosco to work on his fields.
