The mustard seed in our hearts

In this Sunday’s Gospel Reading, Jesus taught us that the kingdom of God is “like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.” (Mark 4:31-32)

For us who believe in Jesus and the Kingdom of God, the mustard seed has been sown in our hearts. Do we know how the mustard seed is growing? Are we taking good care of it? Are we nurturing the mustard seed into a shrub in our hearts, hearts that are able to offer love and goodness to all of God’s creation, so that we can all live together in joy and harmony on this earth that God created for us?

Let us challenge ourselves to have a soft spot in our hearts for everyone, for all people. Not only should we have good intention in our deeds and action, we must see to it that the good intention is turning into good deeds which bring goodness to the people and the world around us. Then the mustard seed in our hearts is indeed growing strong, “so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.” (Mark 4:32)
