Pope Francis: Pride empties prayer and keeps God at a distance

(CNA/EWTN News) One who prays with humility and awareness of his or her sin speaks to God, Pope Francis said on Wednesday, whereas one who prays with arrogance and self-righteousness is speaking to a mirror. “It is not enough to ask ourselves how often we pray,” the Pope said to the thousands of people gathered in St. Peter's Square for the weekly general audience. “We must also ask ourselves how we pray, or rather, how our heart is.”

Peace that the World cannot Give

One who is presumptuous often imagines that he has gained God’s peace through self-distrust and trust in God when the case is far otherwise. And this will be made clear to you by the way he takes his failures. If, after a fall, you give way to despondency and vexation, and despairingly complain that you […]

Born of the Holy Spirit

The expression, “Marvel not,” shows that Nicodemus was surprised at His doctrine. Jesus then makes an example from the motion of the wind; “The wind blows where it lists, and you hear the sound thereof, but can not tell whence it comes, and whither it goes: so is every one that is born of the […]

Washing of the Disciples’ Feet

Why has Jesus done this now? The Apostles were to enjoy honor in the future. In order then that they may not exalt themselves one above the other, and say as they did before, “Who is the greatest” (Matt 18:1), nor be angry one against the other, He takes down the ambitions of them all, […]

Jesus and Abraham

(本文以英文為準) The worldly minds of the Jews are intent on the flesh only; they think only of Jesus’ age in the flesh: “Then said the Jews to Him, you are not fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” that is to say, “Many ages have passed since Abraham died; and how […]

Our Prejudices Shut Jesus Out

Saturday of week 4 of Lent – Gospel In today’s and yesterday’s Gospel readings, we read that the crowd was in dispute over Jesus’ identity. Some said that Jesus must be the Messiah, whereas others said he could not possibly be the Messiah since He came from Galilee. They thought that […]

The one who humbles himself will be exalted

Saturday of week 3 of Lent – Gospel In today’s Gospel, we see two distinct ways of praying. The Pharisee is self-righteous and full of arrogance. He is contemptuous of the tax collector who is also in the temple. His prayer does not really count since it is no more […]

Spiritual Talk – 1st Sunday of Lent 2014

On the 1st Sunday of Lent, Fr. Anthony Ho takes an in-depth look at Satan's 3 Temptations of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew. Jesus overcame the devil's temptations and set a good example for us to follow, blessing us with the grace we need to fight the devil. These 3 temptations are actually still very relevant and real to us today in our daily lives. They are pleasure (or desires), power and pride. We must rely on God's help in order to avoid or defeat these many forms of temptations in our lives.

He must increase, I must decrease

(本文以英文為準) “He must increase, but I must decrease.” What does this mean? God neither increases nor decreases. For if He increases, He is not perfect; if He decreases, He is not God. This is a great mystery! Before the Lord Jesus came, men were glorifying themselves; the Word came as a man, to […]

He Who Humbles Himself will be Exalted

Commentaries on the daily readings by Sacred Space, Summa Theologica(SS.Q162.A7-8), Catena Aurea on Luke 18 In this Sunday’s gospel reading, we are presented with two very polarising figures in the Pharisee and the tax collector. They are strikingly contrasted against each other to illustrate the good role model […]

Whoever humbles himself will be exalted

In today’s Gospel, Jesus had gone for a meal to the house of one of the Pharisees on a Sabbath day. The Pharisees watched Him closely to see if they could accuse Him. In the New Testament, the meals that Christians share are supposed to be moments of […]

Pharisaical Pride

In today’s Gospel, we read the last two of the seven “Woes” which Jesus said of the Pharisees and scribes. Jesus said: “You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of filth.” Given Israel’s rocky landscape, […]
