Lord, help me see

Jesus told his disciples a parable: “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher. Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,’ when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.”
Luke 6:39-42

In today’s Gospel, Jesus taught His disciples: the blind cannot lead the blind. Jesus is the teacher of all Christians. We cannot do anything unless we learn from the teacher. We must listen carefully to what Jesus tells us and make it part of our own lives. Only then can we effectively lead others to Him.

Jesus pinpointed a common flaw in humans: “Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own?” He compared us to the blind, because we often look at others in a subjective way. And usually we have no idea of the inner motives or intentions of others. This results in biases against people. Jesus indeed picked an accurate analogy by comparing us to the blind.

Let us pray to Jesus so that we could overcome our biases and see the truth. We need to learn to humble ourselves, and ask for Jesus’ help in seeing the wooden beam in our own eyes. Otherwise, not only would we fail to lead others to Him, we too would become distanced from Him.
