The Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth

Mary set out in those days and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”
Luke 1:39-45

This bible passage happened after the angel Gabriel announced the birth of Jesus and Elizabeth’s pregnancy to Mary. Though she knew Elizabeth was barren and in her old age, she has faith to believe in what the angel said, and traveled to visit her cousin in haste.

When they met, the Holy Spirit was among them: the infant leaped for joy in Elizabeth’s womb as he felt the Saviour and His mother approaching, and Elizabeth recognized Mary as “the mother of her Lord”, even though Mary was her younger cousin.

The Holy Spirit is often represented by wind: the wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes (John 3:8). Have we always kept ourselves open as Elizabeth, so God may fill us with the Holy Spirit as He pleases? And do we always respond positively to God’s plans, like Mary, even though we might not fully understand what lies ahead?
