Rev. Daniel W. CHUI C.S.B.
Obituary

CHUI, Rev. Daniel W., C.S.B. – Suddenly in his room at the Basilian retirement home Anglin House on Sunday, December 21, 2014 after a three-year, peaceful battle with esophageal cancer. He was born in Hong Kong on September 19, 1959, the son of the late Pui Chui and Ying Tang. He met the Basilian Fathers at the University of Saskatchewan, was professed on January 2, 1996 and ordained June 29, 2000. He then served as assistant pastor at Assumption Church, Windsor, ON, for three years before being appointed as a teacher at St. Michael’s College School while assisting in the formation of seminarians in the Congregation of St. Basil for four years. In 2007, he was sent to Holy Rosary Church, Toronto, ON, where he became pastor early in the next year until his cancer caused him to leave in 2012. After being diagnosed that he was in remission, he returned to Assumption Church in late 2012 until he returned to Toronto early this year to more easily access medical treatment. Daniel was well loved in the parishes in which he worked because he was unfailingly friendly and cheerful. Throughout his illness he impressed everyone with his peaceful acceptance of whatever was happening to him. This obviously demonstrated his deep faith in a loving God. He is survived by his mother Ying, his siblings Goretti, Sr. Maddalena F.M.A., Vincent, Christopher and nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held in the Chapel of the Cardinal Flahiff Basilian Centre, 95 St. Joseph Street, Toronto, on Friday, December 26th from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. until a Wake Service at 7:30 p.m.

Visitation will also be held on Saturday, December 27th from 9 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Basil’s Church, 50 St. Joseph Street, Toronto. Burial will be at the Basilian plot at Holy Cross Cemetery, Thornhill, ON. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Basilian Fathers Retirement Fund, 95 St. Joseph Street, Toronto, ON, M5S 3C2. Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home & Chapel

    Dear Fr Chui,

Though I haven’t met you before, I got a feeling of familiarity when I saw your face in FLL!
Your last interview was really touching and inspired me a lot.
I started to pray for you since I had heard you’re sick; and even now I have kept praying for you & your family, probably you’ve already enjoying the eternity at the moment, please remember us when you enter into our Lord’s kingdom. I look forward to seeing you in our Father’s place one day!

    In Christ

    Our Beloved Father Chui,

You had a way to touch people, not so much by words, but by your bright smile, your sincerity, your gentleness. All these stemmed from a rare child-like humility and simplicity so well preserved in you. Sad as we are by your passing, we are happy that the panting, hunger and thirst you had for God are now satisfied in fullness. It must be wonderful!

Thank-you, Father Chui, that ten years ago in 2005, you helped us to organize a parish retreat which has now evolved into an annual parish event that many of us can hardly wait for. Amid your busy schedule, you were always there for us when we needed a retreat spiritual director. In one retreat, you taught us how to pray with the psalms. What a treasure you had opened to us!

And to Father Chui’s dear mother and family, thank-you for raising such a fine son, fit to be a priest of God. May God’s peace and love be with you now and always.

Pray for us, Father Chui, that we’ll serve God bravely like you. See you in Heaven.

I met Rev. Fr. Chui in the UOT Continuing Education Mandarin class. Little did I know he was a Catholic priest during the seminar, ever though he wore all black in every class. His calmness, peacefulness, eagerness to learn and help other students to pronounce Mandarin properly, and the constant smile in him gave me the impression that there was something very special within him.

Only in the last class did one of the students recognized him as Fr. Chui.

I learn from another priest that “Life is Short, but Eternity is Long".

Fr. Chui, may you rest in peace in the eternal love of our Almighty God, and may our Lord Jesus and Mother Mary shower your soul with blessings for all the good work you had done on earth in our Lord’s ministry.

    Michael Chan, Toronto.

    Dearest Fr. Chui,

We, a group of parishioners from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, always remember your smile when you first came to OLMC to help celebrate with Sunday Masses during the passing of our parish pastor Fr. John Mak in 2001. We also remember when you first celebrated your first matrimonial wedding mass in our parish and we said you had never married before (meant you had not performed or officiate a matrimonial wedding prior to this before). These were the fond memories left to our group, always remember !

May you rest in the palm of God’s hand now and forever. Amen.
