Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me.
John 12:23-26

In today's Gospel, Jesus told a parable of the grain of wheat. In order for a grain of wheat to produce fruits, it must fall to the ground and die. Jesus told this parable about the nature of seeds to help people understand. Seeds cannot produce new life by themselves. They must first be planted in the earth before they can product fruits. Jesus use this parable to refer to Himself, that He must first go through crucifixion, buried, before He rose from the dead on the third day.

Jesus said: "Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life." If we are to experience the new life that Jesus brought us, our old self must be buried. Through the Sacrament of Baptism, and a daily abandonment of sin, we become a new man in Christ.

It is All Souls' Day today. It is a solemn feast of the Catholic Church commemorating all of those who have died and now are in Purgatory. Let us remember to pray for the souls in purgatory throughout the month of November.
